Arnold Schwarzenegger cult sci-fi to get even creepier at unique Birmingham outdoor cinema

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sci-fi movie Predator is about to get even creepier with a unique outdoor cinema screening among nature in Birmingham. Among the squawking birds and rustling leaves of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, movie-goers will be able to watch the cult classic in eerie darkness.

It is one of two films being screened over August Bank Holiday weekend at the historic beauty spot in Harborne. The Botanical Gardens has tropical plants and bird houses with exotic creatures similar to that in Predators’ rainforest setting.

The terrifying 1980s action movie for 18-year-olds and over is being shown on Saturday August 26 at the Westbourne Rd venue. It features elite paramilitary leader Arnold Schwarzenegger wading through the Guatemalan jungle to save hostages but thwarted by an alien predator that is hunting his team down.

There’s a more family-friendly feel on Sunday August 27 when the outdoor cinema screens My Neighbour Totoro. It’s ideal for the lush surroundings as Hayao Miyazaki’s classic anime that follows two young sisters as they befriend magical creatures residing in a nearby forest.

The tale has become more popular since adapted to stage in an award-winning turn by the Royal Shakespeare Company(RSC).

Flatpack Festival and Digbeth’s The Mockingbird Cinema have teamed up with Botanical Gardens for the unique events. Visitors to both movies are also being encouraged to dress up for a cosplay competition over both days.
