Back to the Future‘s original cast members reunited to celebrate the film’s musical hitting Broadway.

The cult film – which was released in 1985 – has been adapted into a stage show of the same name which premiered in the West End in London in 2015. It’s now transferred to Broadway, with that production in previews ahead of opening night next month. A gala performance was held at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City on Tuesday. Among those in attendance were cast members from the film trilogy including Michael J. Fox, 62, Christopher Lloyd, 84, and Lea Thompson, 62.

Michael played the character Marty McFly in the film series, whilst co-star Christopher was cast as Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown. Lea played Marty’s mother Lorraine Baines-McFly. The trio appeared in all three films in the Back to the Future trilogy.

The three actors posed together outside the theatre whilst at the gala performance of the Broadway adaptation. This included in a photo alongside Casey Likes and Roger Bart, who play Marty and Doc respectively in the production. It comes nearly four decades since the release of Back to the Future (1985), which spawned the sequels Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990). The original film has also inspired theme park attractions, a video game, a TV series and other ventures since its release.

And it isn’t the first time that the cast have reunited this year, with the trio posing alongside former co-star Tom Wilson – who played Biff Tannen, among other roles – in a selfie shared in February. It was taken at a fan convention. Michael spoke about the legacy of the film series in an interview with Entertainment Tonight last year, saying that for some reason it “connects with people on every level”.

Discussing the success of the original film – which was awarded an Oscar and other accolades upon its release – the actor told the outlet that “people don’t just like it and remember it,” they instead “celebrate it and embrace it”. Back to the Future: The Musical is now playing at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City. The West End production is at the Adelphi Theatre in London. And there’s a North American tour of the musical scheduled for next year.
