Bond ordinance for acquisition of open space introduced – Star News Group

BRICK TOWNSHIP —  The township council Tuesday introduced a bond ordinance that would appropriate $390,000 to finance acquisition and preservation of an additional acre and a half of land near an existing open space tract.

“The Brick Open Space Savers Committee (BOSS) is recommending the acquisition of property located on the corner of Herbertsville Road and Maple Avenue and adjacent to the 175 acre Sawmill Tract open space area,” Mayor Lisa Crate said at the Nov. 21 council meeting.

According to the mayor, this property is listed on the township’s most recent incentive plan as a proposed acquisition and will provide additional acreage to the township’s recreation and open space inventory.

Susan Castiglia of BOSS said, “We are a citizens advisory committee that has worked for the past two and a half years already towards our mission of evaluating properties to be acquired for open space and conservation purposes.”

Ms. Castiglia said, “Far from being completely developed, Brick still has many properties under private ownership, which remain in a natural state. The Brick open space committee seeks out these properties and ranks each one based on a variety of factors like if it is contiguous with other preserved open space, if it abuts to a water body or if it contains wetlands.”

According to Ms. Castiglia, the acquisition of the proposed area checks off all of the boxes, which would add one and a half acres of open space, which is contiguous with the Sawmill Tract.
